My Kids, Martin Schoeller Style

As an artist, I have always made it a point to study the works of other photographers. Their different styles and techniques are an inspiration to try new things with light, composition or subject matter. Recently I became intrigued by the work of Martin Schoeller. His straightforward, extreme close-ups of famous (and not so famous) people are full of detail and very “in your face,” if you’ll pardon the pun. (more…)

Vivitar 285HV hacked to Add 3.5mm Mono Jack

This past Tuesday I had a shoot with a model down in the tunnels under Springfield. I brought along all my Strobist gear as usual, but I ran into a major malfunction with my flash. I had set it up around the corner down the tunnel to provide light for the tunnel walls in the background. However, the flash failed to fire 9 times out of 10. I spent way too much time in the dark trying to get the damned thing to work. Luckily, my model is also a good friend and was very patient with me. (more…)

In the Real Springfield Underground

Tuesday night Liana, a good friend and one of my favorite models, took me downtown to shoot in the infamous “Springfield tunnels,” known as a frequent hideout for druggies and vagrants. What a perfect place to shoot! (more…)

Muse Project: October Session Was a Bust

This past weekend, I participated for the second time in the Muse Project, an gathering of photographers, models, hair and makeup artists for building the portfolios of all involved. My previous experience with the Project was back in June, and it was a blast. I was kept very busy, met a lot of wonderful people, and walked away with a lot of great shots. (more…)

My Scary Geisha

I invited Ange GoGo over tonight for a “scary Geisha” shoot using a kimono I borrowed from a friend. She brought along her own makeup artist to handle the laborious process of applying the white body paint. Ange was excited about doing an Asian-themed shoot, and I was surprised no one had asked her to do one in the past. (more…)
