Cemetery Excursion

After complaining (just a little!) to some of my Twitter friends that I have not been making time to shoot because of business start-up tasks, I brought my camera with me in the car while taking the kids to their summer programs this morning. On my way back, I drove by the cemetery and, well, you can guess the rest.

I have had a love/hate relationship with cemeteries for most of my life. Philosophically I loathe them because in my opinion a cemetery is a bunch of corpses taking up otherwise useful real estate, and I would come back to haunt anyone who put me in the ground like that. Artistically, however, I simply love them. They are creepy yet weirdly beautiful, with deteriorating headstones mirroring the decay taking place beneath the ground, set paradoxically in a park-like area of well-kept grass and majestic trees.

These images were taken about 7:45 in the morning, so the sun was still fairly low in the sky. They’ve been grayscaled and toned with minor local adjustments, but otherwise they are pretty much straight out of the camera. You can catch the rest in my Concepts set on Flickr.

Enjoy!
